The Light of the World

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD IS JESUS

Bible Texts: ISA.9:2; MATT.4:16; JOHN 1:4-9; 8:12; LK.2:8-9; 5: 14-16

INTRODUCTION: The five candles of Advent that are used on the Sundays preceding the Birth of Christ are all given names, for instance, this third Sunday Candle is called the “Shepherd’s Candle.” They are symbols of the various stories of Christmas in the Bible.. The main and last candle to be lit is in the center and is called theChrist Candle. All of the candles are to symbolize the Light of the World which is our Lord Jesus Christ.

It is amazing how Christmas lights play a great part in the celebration of Christ. Every year around the world, Christmas is celebrated with festival of lights. Even in Thailand, there are Christmas trees with lights everywhere at Christmas. Isaiah told us that “the people that sat in darkness saw a great light and to them that sat in the region and shadow of death, light is sprung up.” (Isaiah 9:2, Mt.4:16). That great light is none other than Jesus. Isaiah 9:7 tells us that “a child will be born, a son will be given.” That child is Jesus. Everything about the birth of Jesus is surrounded by LIGHT.

Matthew told us of the Light of the Star as it guided the Wise Men to Jesus. (Matt.2:9-10). The Star stood over where the Baby Jesus lay. Also Matthew quoted the prophecy of Isaiah 9:2 in Matt.4:16. So, Jesus as Light of the world guides us today.

John said, that Jesus is the Light that came into the world and is the true Light the lights every man in the world. (John 1:4-9; 8:12).

So at Christmas, let us remember that these Christmas lights and candles remind us  that Jesus is our LIGHT OF THE WORLD.  Because of Him, we can give our witness to Him as the Light. Jesus also calls us to be lights of the world as well. This means that we are to be witnesses of The Light by doing good works and shining as lesser lights, so as to bring glory to God. (Matthew 5:14-16).

This week, think about how you are a light that helps people around you see Jesus.  In everything you do and say this week, let Jesus' light shine through you!!
