In the third commandment, found in Exodus 20 we find the words,"You shall not take the Name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His Name in vain." On Sunday, March 8, we will be looking at this commandment together. Always keep in mind that commandments really are commands and not suggestions. Our society has so abused God's Name that it is used in vain everywhere in conversation, on T.V., when we are angry, when we are excited and most of us think nothing of it. God warned His people that they would be found guilty if they used His Name without respect. Without a doubt we are all guilty of doing this at some point or another. Take the common word that so many people use these days, "Jeez". It is a derivative of the word "Jesus"....His Name, His Holy Name!! We overlook such things but God says we are guilt of taking His Name lightly and in vain.
What did Jesus say about His Name? In John 16:23, Jesus told His disciples, "....whatever you ask the Father in My Name, He will give you." There is power, His power, in His Name. Proverbs 18:10 says, "The Name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe." There is power in His Name. This week, in preparation for our study on Sunday, be careful how you use the Lord's Name. Also, it might be a good thing for you to look up what is taught about God's Name in the Bible. You might begin with the Lord's Prayer that we repeat every Sunday which begins with, "Our Father, in heaven, HOLY is your Name!"
God bless you, Your Pastor
